H1: Flood damage cleaning Bristol

Storm Babet hit Bristol hard in October 2023. We spent three straight weeks in Bedminster, Ashton Gate and Southville pulling water out of ground-floor properties. One family on Coronation Road had 18 inches of water through their living room and kitchen. Their insurer’s approved contractor couldn’t start for nine days.

We had pumps running within two hours of their call.

That’s what matters when your home is flooded. Not who’s cheapest. Who’s fastest.

Flooded in Bristol? Call 0808 303 7072 right now. We’re in BS10 and can reach you within 30 minutes.

Bristol’s Flood Risk: It’s Not Just the River

Bristol has a complicated relationship with water. The city grew around the Avon and the Frome, and those rivers still remind us they were here first.

But river flooding is only part of the picture. The bigger threat for most Bristol residents is surface water flooding: overwhelmed drains, blocked culverts and saturated ground that can’t absorb any more rain. Bristol Water and Wessex Water have identified over 14,000 properties in the Bristol area at risk of surface water flooding.

High-risk areas we attend regularly:

  • Bedminster and Southville (BS3): Low-lying, close to the river, Victorian drainage. We’ve done more flood callouts here than anywhere else in the city
  • Ashton Vale and Ashton Gate (BS3): The Longmoor Brook floods in heavy rain. Properties along Baynton Road and Ashton Drive know the drill
  • Temple and Redcliffe (BS1): Urban flooding from overwhelmed storm drains. Commercial properties particularly affected
  • St Werburgh’s and Easton (BS2/BS5): The Frome culvert backs up. We’ve attended properties on Mina Road and Ashley Down Road after heavy rain
  • Fishponds and Eastville (BS5/BS16): The Frome again, plus clay soils that don’t drain well

We also attend plenty of floods that have nothing to do with weather. Burst pipes in Clifton’s Victorian townhouses. Washing machine failures in new-builds in Bradley Stoke. Boiler leaks in Horfield terraces. A plumbing failure at 2am causes exactly the same damage as a storm.

Our Bristol Flood Response

We’re on Southmead Road, BS10. That’s five minutes from the M5 junction at Cribbs Causeway, 15 minutes from the city centre, and within 30 minutes of every Bristol postcode.

When you call our emergency line, here’s what happens:

Hour 1: We take your details, assess the situation by phone, and get a team moving. For active flooding (water still coming in), we prioritise stopping the source if possible and starting extraction immediately.

Hours 2-4: Industrial pumps and extractors remove standing water. We assess the damage, photograph everything for your insurance, and plan the drying setup.

Day 1-2: Moisture mapping of the entire affected area. Industrial dehumidifiers and air movers positioned based on the specific layout of your property and the moisture readings. Contaminated materials identified and removed.

Days 3-14: Monitored structural drying. We check readings every day or two, adjust equipment, and don’t sign off until every surface is within acceptable moisture limits. Bristol’s older buildings (stone walls, lime plaster, timber floors) take longer to dry than modern construction. We account for that.

Final stage: Sanitisation, anti-microbial treatment, and a complete documentation pack for your insurer.

Bristol Properties Need Bristol Knowledge

Personally, I think this is something that national disaster recovery firms miss when they send a team to Bristol. The building stock here is specific.

Georgian and Victorian terraces (Clifton, Redland, Cotham, Montpelier): Solid stone or brick walls, lime plaster, timber suspended floors with ventilated voids. These buildings dry differently to modern construction. Rush the drying process and you crack the lime plaster. Use the wrong dehumidifier settings and you stress the stonework.

1930s semis (Horfield, Bishopston, Southmead, Filton): Cavity walls, but often with debris-filled cavities that trap moisture. Timber floors on sleeper walls. Prone to rising damp after flooding if the DPC is compromised.

Post-war council stock (Hartcliffe, Knowle West, Lawrence Weston, Southmead): Solid concrete floors, sometimes with inadequate DPMs. These dry slowly but predictably. The risk is mould growth in unventilated cupboards and behind kitchen units.

New-builds (Bradley Stoke, Emersons Green, Lyde Green): Lightweight construction, plasterboard walls, chipboard floors. These absorb water fast and can be ruined fast. But they also dry quickly if you get equipment in early.

We know Bristol’s housing. We adjust our approach accordingly.

Flood Damage Costs in Bristol

Rough guide for Bristol properties:

  • Single room, burst pipe, caught quickly: £400 to £800
  • Ground floor, moderate flooding, two to three rooms: £1,200 to £2,500
  • Full ground floor, extensive damage, structural drying needed: £2,500 to £5,000+
  • Contaminated water (sewage or river flooding): Add 30-50% for decontamination protocols

These figures cover extraction, drying and sanitisation. They don’t include building repairs (replastering, reflooring, redecorating), which your insurer will typically handle through a separate contractor.

We give fixed quotes. And for insurance claims, the cost is between your insurer and us. You don’t usually pay out of pocket beyond your excess.

Working With Bristol Insurers

We’ve handled flood claims with most major insurers operating in the Bristol area. Aviva, AXA, Direct Line, Zurich, NFU Mutual, LV=, Admiral. We know their processes.

One thing worth knowing: most policies include provision for “emergency mitigation.” That means you can instruct us to start extraction immediately without waiting for insurer approval, as long as the steps are reasonable. Pulling water out of your flooded kitchen at midnight on a Saturday is reasonable. Waiting until Monday for a loss adjuster to visit while your floorboards warp is not.

We document everything from the moment we arrive. Timestamped photos, moisture readings, equipment logs, disposal records. Your loss adjuster gets a professional pack that makes their job easier and your claim smoother.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you respond to flooding in Bristol?

We’re in BS10. For central Bristol and most BS postcodes, we can have a team on site within 30 to 45 minutes of your call. For outer areas (Bath, Yate, Portishead), usually within an hour. We answer our emergency line 24/7, including weekends and bank holidays.

What should I do while waiting for you to arrive?

Turn off the electricity at the consumer unit if water is near sockets or appliances. Stop the water source if you can (stopcock for pipes, shut-off valve for appliances). Move valuables upstairs. Start photographing the damage for your insurance. Don’t try to use electrical appliances in or near standing water.

Do you cover all of Bristol for flood emergencies?

Yes. Every BS postcode, plus Bath (BA1/BA2), South Gloucestershire (BS15, BS16, BS32, BS34, BS35, BS36, BS37), and North Somerset (BS20, BS21, BS48, BS49). For anything within the Bristol boundary, we’re typically there in under 30 minutes.

Can you work directly with my insurance company?

Yes. We deal with insurers and loss adjusters regularly. We can invoice your insurer directly if they agree to it, or we can provide all documentation for you to submit. Either way, our paperwork is designed to support claims.

How long will the drying take in a typical Bristol house?

A modern property with plasterboard walls: 5 to 7 days usually. A Victorian or Edwardian terrace with solid walls and timber floors: 7 to 14 days, sometimes longer. We monitor daily and don’t remove equipment until the readings are safe. Rushing it leads to mould.
