Yacht Cleaning Costs in the UK: What You’ll Actually Pay
Owning a boat is expensive. You knew that when you bought it. But the cleaning and maintenance costs catch people off guard because nobody talks about them honestly. So let’s fix that.
I’ve been cleaning boats around Bristol’s marinas for years. Here’s what things actually cost, what affects the price, and why skipping maintenance is the most expensive option of all.
Pricing Structures: Per Foot Is Standard
Most marine cleaning in the UK is quoted per foot of overall length (LOA). That’s the standard. Some companies quote per hour, which makes comparison harder and usually means the final bill is unpredictable.
Per-foot pricing is transparent. You know your boat’s length. You can calculate the cost before you pick up the phone.
Some services are quoted as fixed prices for specific tasks, like interior valeting or engine bay cleaning. But for hull and exterior work, per-foot is the norm.
A few things to note about per-foot pricing:
- It’s based on LOA, not waterline length
- Beam (width) matters too. A wide-beamed canal boat at 40ft has more surface area than a narrow sailing yacht at 40ft. Some companies adjust for this.
- Multihulls and catamarans cost more per foot than monohulls because of the extra hull surface
Typical Price Ranges
Here’s what you’ll pay across the UK in 2026. Bristol and the South West sit roughly in the middle of national pricing.
Basic Exterior Washdown: £6-£9 per foot
This is your regular maintenance wash. Freshwater rinse, hand wash with marine shampoo, chamois dry. It removes salt, grime, bird droppings, and general dirt.
For a 35ft boat: £210-£315.
How often: every 2-4 weeks during the season, monthly over winter if the boat’s afloat.
Full Exterior Detail: £25-£45 per foot
The proper job. Wash, clay bar, compound if needed, polish, wax or sealant. This restores gelcoat shine, removes oxidation, and protects against UV and salt.
For a 35ft boat: £875-£1,575.
How often: once or twice a year. Spring is most popular, with a top-up before autumn.
Interior Valet: £15-£30 per foot
Full interior clean. Upholstery vacuumed and cleaned, galley deep cleaned, heads sanitised, woodwork polished, bilges cleaned, all surfaces wiped.
For a 35ft boat: £525-£1,050.
How often: twice a year minimum. Before and after the season.
Ceramic Coating Application: £30-£60 per foot
Marine ceramic coating applied after full paint correction. This is the premium option. Provides long-lasting protection that reduces ongoing cleaning costs.
For a 35ft boat: £1,050-£2,100.
How often: every 2-5 years depending on the product and conditions.
Antifoul and Hull Work: £20-£40 per foot
Pressure wash below the waterline, old antifoul removal if needed, new antifoul applied. Usually done during a haul-out.
For a 35ft boat: £700-£1,400.
How often: annually.
Teak Deck Restoration: £15-£25 per foot
Cleaning, sanding, and treating teak decks. Restores the golden colour and protects against greying and black spots.
For a 35ft boat with teak: £525-£875.
How often: every 1-2 years.
What Affects the Price
Two identical-length boats can cost very different amounts to clean. Here’s why.
Condition. A well-maintained boat that gets regular washdowns costs less to detail than one that’s been neglected for three seasons. Oxidised gelcoat needs cutting compound and machine polishing. That takes hours.
Type. Motor yachts tend to have more superstructure, more glass, and more vertical surfaces. Sailing yachts have rigging to work around. Each has its own challenges.
Location. Marina access varies. Some berths are easy to work alongside. Others involve carrying equipment down pontoons, through locked gates, and across finger berths. Portishead Quays Marina is well laid out for maintenance access. Some of the older pontoons at Bristol Harbour are trickier.
Material. GRP is standard. But painted hulls need different products. Vinyl wraps need gentle handling. Metal-hulled boats need their own approach. Each material affects time and product cost.
Extras. Engine bay cleaning, bilge treatment, waterline stain removal, stainless steel polishing. These add up. Budget for them separately.
Honestly, the biggest cost driver I see is neglect. People skip a season of washes to save money, then pay three times as much for restoration work the following spring. I’ve seen it happen over and over.
The Value of Regular Maintenance
Here’s the maths that most boat owners don’t do until it’s too late.
Scenario A: Regular maintenance
- Monthly washdowns April-October (7 months): £210 x 7 = £1,470
- One full detail in spring: £1,200
- Two interior valets: £700 x 2 = £1,400
- Annual total: roughly £4,070
Scenario B: Minimal maintenance
- Nothing for two years
- Then: full restoration detail with heavy cutting: £2,500
- Interior deep clean (mould, musty fabric, grime): £1,800
- Possible gelcoat repair from unchecked staining: £800+
- Catch-up total: roughly £5,100+
Scenario A keeps the boat in great condition, maintains resale value, and makes it pleasant to use every weekend. Scenario B means two years of a boat you’re slightly embarrassed to be seen on, followed by a hefty bill.
Regular cleaning also catches problems early. We spot cracked sealant, corroded fittings, chafe on lines, and dodgy anodes. That’s not our job, but we flag it. Finding a failed seal during a washdown is cheaper than finding the water damage it caused six months later.
BCH at Bristol’s Marinas
We’re based at BS10 5EN, which puts us within easy reach of Portishead Quays Marina, Bristol Harbour, Portbury, and the Avon marinas. We know the local conditions: the Bristol Channel’s high tidal range means serious salt exposure, and the Severn mud gets everywhere.
Our yacht cleaning service covers everything from regular washdowns to full ceramic coating applications. We carry £2 million in insurance, which matters when you’re working on a vessel worth six or seven figures.
Call 07985 505061 or email hello@bristolcleaningheroes.co.uk for a quote. We’ll want to know the boat’s length, type, current condition, and what you’re after. From there, we’ll give you a straight price.
