Deep Clean vs Regular Clean: What’s the Actual Difference?

“Can you just give it a good clean?”

We hear that about three times a week. And honestly, it could mean anything. A quick hoover and wipe-down. A full strip-back of every surface. Something in between. The problem is, “a good clean” means different things to different people.

So let’s clear it up. There are three levels of cleaning, and they do very different jobs. Understanding which one you need saves you money, time, and the frustration of paying for something that doesn’t fix the problem.

What a Regular Clean Covers

A regular clean is your maintenance clean. The stuff you’d do weekly or fortnightly to keep a home looking tidy and smelling fresh.

We’re talking:

  • Hoovering carpets and hard floors
  • Wiping down kitchen surfaces and hob
  • Cleaning the bathroom (toilet, sink, bath/shower)
  • Dusting visible surfaces
  • Emptying bins
  • Mopping hard floors

That’s the bread and butter. It keeps things ticking over. If you stay on top of it, your home looks presentable and hygienic enough for day-to-day life.

But here’s what it doesn’t do. It doesn’t get behind the cooker. It doesn’t clean inside the oven. It doesn’t touch skirting boards, door frames, light switches, or the top of the kitchen cabinets. It doesn’t deal with what’s embedded in your carpet fibres. It doesn’t address what’s growing behind the bath panel.

A regular clean deals with the surface. That’s its job. And for most weeks of the year, that’s enough.

What a Deep Clean Covers

A deep clean goes further. Much further.

This is the kind of clean most people mean when they say they want the place “properly done.” It covers everything in a regular clean, plus:

  • Inside the oven, hob, and extractor
  • Behind and under appliances (fridge, washing machine, cooker)
  • Inside kitchen cupboards and drawers
  • Skirting boards, door frames, and architraves
  • Window sills and frames
  • Light switches, plug sockets, and handles
  • Bathroom grout, tile surfaces, and behind toilets
  • Inside wardrobes and cupboard tops

A standard deep clean typically takes two to three times longer than a regular clean. For a three-bed semi, you’re looking at six to eight hours for two cleaners. It’s a proper reset.

Most homes benefit from a deep clean at least twice a year. Spring and autumn, ideally. If you’ve got pets or kids, maybe three or four times. Think of it like a car service. You wash your car regularly, but every now and then you need someone to actually clean it properly.

We do a lot of deep cleans around the Southmead and Filton areas, and one thing we always notice is how much grime builds up around extractor fans and behind bathroom cabinets. People are genuinely shocked.

What a Specialist Deep Clean Covers

This is where it gets serious. A specialist deep clean isn’t just thorough. It uses different equipment, different chemicals, and targets problems that regular or standard deep cleaning can’t touch.

Here’s what separates it.

Allergen extraction. Standard hoovering, even with a decent machine, leaves dust mites, pet dander, and allergens embedded in carpets, upholstery, and mattresses. Specialist extraction uses hot water at 60 degrees or above, combined with commercial-grade suction, to physically remove what’s living in your soft furnishings. If someone in your household has asthma, eczema, or allergic rhinitis, this is the level you need.

Hospital-grade disinfection. Not all disinfectants are equal. The products you buy in a supermarket don’t meet EN14476 standards for virucidal activity. Specialist cleaning uses tested, certified disinfectants that actually kill viruses like norovirus and bacteria like MRSA. If you need to disinfect after illness, this is what works.

Mould treatment. Surface mould sprays from B&Q mask the problem. They bleach the colour but don’t kill the root system. Specialist treatment involves identifying the mould species, treating with professional-grade biocides, and addressing the moisture source. We’ve covered this in detail in our mould removal guide.

Odour elimination. Pet smells, smoke, damp, food. If the smell has soaked into soft furnishings, carpets, or even plasterwork, no amount of air freshener fixes it. Specialist cleaning targets the source of the odour, not just the symptom. Sometimes that means enzymatic treatment. Sometimes ozone generation. It depends on what’s causing it.

Honestly, about half the people who book a standard deep clean with us actually need the specialist version. The clue is usually in why they’re calling. If it’s “we just want everything freshened up,” a standard deep clean is fine. If it’s “we’ve got a smell we can’t shift” or “my daughter’s asthma is getting worse,” that’s specialist territory.
